Joseph J. Visser: a Painter & Draughtsman

In de periode 1970 - 1980 schilderde Joop in olieverf, in het atelier, doeken en panelen (ongeveer 120x120cm).
Deze schilderijen ontstonden als gevolg van impressies tijdens wandelingen, fietsreizen en reizen te paard door Nederland, Engeland en Ierland.
Daarnaast maakte Joop in die tijd enkele studiereizen door Europa en Turkije in verband met de architectuur (bouwstructuren van dorpen op het platte land en de ideeën van Le Corbusier en van de architecten rond de groepen waarmee Aldo van Eijk van gedachten wisselde) die een blijvende indruk op hem maakten en die in al hun aspecten de bron zijn gebleven waaruit hij, steeds verdiepend, blijft putten
Daarvoor maakte hij honderden foto's als dokumentatie en talloze potloodschetsen en aantekeningen, als ook korte muziekale notities (geluidfragmenten) die dienst deden als opfrisser van de herinnering.
Deze notities hadden geen enkele bedoelde artisieke waarde en zijn, hoewel er vast van alles rondzwerft, nooit getoond of bewaard.

In the years between 1970 and 1980 Joop has painted oils on canvas and panel, all about 120x120cms.

Joseph Visser worked in those days (as he is in all techniques these days) with mostly traditionally made materials - rabbit skin glue to protect the canvas, a mixture of chalk and rabbit skin glue for a first layer, and from there the first colour-use in a mix with the rabbit skin glue that is to make the basic decissions on what may shine through in more or less uplighting areas in the actual composition;
the paints he used were partly ready made 'Scheveningen' and partly the oil paint he made himself every day, with the traditionally different oil-poises, depending on the pigment and the stage the painting was in.

Over the years Joseph has maintained the habbit of making sketches in pencil, though mostly his sketches were scribbled sentences of a more poetic nature and short fragments of music - sounds rather than musical lines;
as such these sketches may have come in to the othere disciplines that he has always worked in - whilst on the other hand he's almost thrown away all these 'scribbles'.
