'Coastal Pieces' bestaat o.a. uit twee series composities; serie één is een doorgecomponeerd stuk voor clavichord, de tweede serie bestaat uit een aantal losse delen voor beiaard.

Aanleiding voor de stukken waren enkele langere reizen en vele wandelingen door Noord-Engeland en Schotland 'in de voetsporen van St. Cuthbert, St. Columba en St Adamnan'. Of, het toevallig gebied tussen Lindisfarne en Kintyre, Ripon/Jervaulx en de Cairngorms

De stukken voor carillon werden meer speciaal geschreven ter gelegenheid van de aanbieding van twee nieuwe klokken voor de beiaard van het stadhuis in Dokkum. Één speciaal exemplaar van het boek is door Drukkerij Douma Dokkum, tevens schenker van één van de klokken, bij deze gelegenheid aangeboden aan burgemeester Cazemier en bevindt zich nu in de collecties van de stad.

Het is de pendant van 'for Fand & Etheldreda' met de stukken voor klavier.

"Cuthbert, St., OF DURHAM (c. 635 - 687). < ­ > When the light of record first falls upon him, he was a shepherd in the kingdom of Northumbria, which then extended to the Forth.< ­ > that he would accept the bishopric of Hexham. < ­ > Still thirsting after solitude, at the end of two years he resigned his bishopric, and returned to his hut, where he died.
Columba, St., (521 ­ 597) < ­> Setting out in 563, when he was in his forty-second year, and accompanied by twelve disciples, he found a resting-place in the little island of Hy or Ioua, now known as Iona, or I Colum-cille, and having planted a community there, he set himself to the conversion of the Pictish tribes beyond yhe Grampians. < ­ > His health began to fail in 593, but his life was prolonged till he reached his 76th year, when he breathed his last as he knelt before the altar of his church in Iona a little after mid-night, between June 8 and 9, 597."

Adamnan (625 ­ 704) was the ninth Abbot at Iona, and biographer of Columba. Adamnan (Gaelic - Adhamhnan) means Little Adam. He was a keen traveller and a friend of the Northumbrian King Aldfrid and the - sounds in English like Eonan. So, Adamnan has left his Gaelic name of Eonan all up and down the Glen. Story has it that Adamnan was caught between "the tonsure of the crown" and "the Celtic tonsure" (from ear to ear), and also had to live with the crown's and Celtic dates for Easter. He therefore, with eleven other Gillean Dhe Evangelists, embarked to preach peace to the men of Alban. On their way on the mainland they walked passed Drumalban, across the wilds of Rannoch Moor, and on the Ridge of Alban each chose a river for himself: Saint Fillan chose Dochart, Saint Adamnan chose River Lyon which meanders down the wild valley, then called, Glean Dubh Crom Nan Garbh Clach.

Terwijl de teksten in 'for Fand & Etheldreda' (gedichten van Joseph John Visser) een gemaakte tocht doen herleven, zijn de teksten van bij de 'Coastal Pieces' (ook weer gedichten van Joseph J. Visser) herinneringen aan 'elders'.

Als in veel andere boeken, en zelfs ook in prenten, is vouwen van de bladen hier weer gebruikt als een middel tot verheviging van de beelden.
Het maakt daarbij ook de ervaring van het bladeren tot een groter avontuur.
